Who am I? Great question. And for those that don’t know me it’s about time I tell you more about me.
I once hoped to work in both the legal and accounting fields. And over my working life I’ve been fortunate to have experienced both and more. The more I fell into. The lawyer I worked for wanted to own a restaurant so he bought one. I worked as a restaurant/bar manager during a time when drinking and driving was not considered taboo. Thankfully society has grown and understands that drinking and driving is not acceptable under any circumstance. Back then though it was a time of drinking and just flat out partying. What a crazy time it was. The stories I could tell. But most importantly … what great people I met and what a fun time I had with them. So much so, that it didn’t feel like a job.
Reflecting back … High school was supposed to be the place where one made career decisions. At 17 or 18 you were supposed to know what you wanted “to be”. Seriously? In my final year of high school I ran the gamut of classes. My curriculum consisted of law, accounting, drama, consumer education and phys ed. All those classes did eventually shape my careers and endeavours but at the time I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. My two most favourite classes were law and accounting. I did well at both. So well that I made the Dean’s list. So being the all wise and knowing 17 year old, I flipped a coin to decide my major. Law it was. My main courses were law related but I couldn’t totally give up accounting so I also took accounting classes. Best of both worlds. Right?
My first career in the legal field shifted to the restaurant business when the law practice moved offices to the restaurant. My background in accounting meant I was elected to take over the bookkeeping. Eventually I was in the dual role of comptroller and restaurant manager. The law was, over time, left by the wayside. When I left the restaurant business I turned to accounting and am ending my career there.
Through all these career changes I have stayed physically active in a variety of ways. I participated in numerous activities but one really grabbed me … inline skating. In previous years I used to repeat the phrase “I’m just a girl who loves to skate.” That was back in the day when my in-line skating, which turned into in-line speed skating (although not very well lol) was the main focus of my fitness regime.
Now I repeat to myself “I’m just a girl wanting to stay fit.” Staying fit is a big part of me and I do a variety of activities to help with that … cycling, in-line skating, yoga, body weight exercises, cardio kickboxing and walking. I think it’s important to move your body any way you can every day. And I’ve found that if you enjoy a particular activity it sure makes it easier to stay fit.
I like a lot of other things … reading, beaches, walking on said beaches, cooking, eating said food, basketball, travelling, meeting people, talking, dancing, lunches with friends, laughing (although I’m a rather serious person overall), good movies (define good, right?) … just off the top of my head.
In the end I just want to enjoy life, connect with people, make a few more friends and laugh. I’m sure we have a lot in common. Doesn’t everyone want to enjoy their life.
Until the next time.
Great writing. Always enjoyed working with you. Be well, safe and happy.
