Chess, debate, math and photography are types of activities that we all typically recall when we think school “clubs”. But, I think there are a few more, namely Sororities and Fraternities. They don’t necessarily come to mind when thinking clubs, but clubs they are in my opinion.
There’ve been several movies made about sororities and fraternities including one of my favourites. National Lampoons Animal House starring John Belushi was released in 1978 during my second year in college. I watched it a number of times, laughing my way through some of the absurdities and what I think were some truths of Sorority and Fraternity life.
My experience with a Sorority was very limited. And it wasn’t entirely pleasant. My brush with it happened at the beginning of the first semester of my 11th grade. I was approached in the 3rd floor girls washroom, of all places, by one of the leaders of a sorority. I found this very weird. To add to the weirdness the person trying to recruit me indicated that the boy I was currently dating might not be an acceptable person to be associated with. Seriously? WTF? At that point I walked away and didn’t look back. I was astounded that this person believed it was fine to try to dictate whom I could associate with. Not cool.
The take away here … sometimes certain “clubs” are ones you shouldn’t join. Just my opinion.
And FYI, that unacceptable boy and I have been married almost 38 years. Clearly he wasn’t unacceptable.
Until the next time.
It’s unfortunate but I do think the majority of these clubs are snobbish and think that they are elite …I was in one but because I was from a smaller populated city …somehow a country farm girl got in…Lol!
I actually never experienced anything negative and when I got into this group I included my country girlfriends who were kind ,sweet and this group never had money ..we actually sponsored an orphan African girl and did a lot of charitable things ….I think their mistake was voting me in!! My mom and Dad taught me to be humble , kind and loving …and I guess most of my life I’ve tried to keep these principles …no sorority ever changed my thoughts…i can’t believe that at this young age of my life I had this insight and the confidence to act like a regular teen…never ever felt above anyone in my life
I recently found a sweatshirt I had from those days with the logo on it…had forgotten about it all..
It was part of my journey in life ..your writing reminded me of that time …I think that these groups are not really too much around here anymore perhaps universities , not really sure …life has changed since our teen years ! Brought me back to my younger years …you always spark an interest with me with your writings…Thanks 😊
We called them 'cliques' and their cliquish ways were a bit too exclusive for my tastes. When my kids went off to college I wondered if they would join one. I was legit concerned about all the negatives with these 'social' clubs, like hazing for one. All my kids worked through high school (as did I) and when I asked my oldest about it, his response was, "I've never had to pay for friends and I'm not gonna start now." His younger siblings felt the same way. Just a different perspective!
