Wikipedia says quid pro quo is
“An exchange of goods or services, in which one transfer is contingent upon the other”.
In other words a favour for a favour. Makes sense to me. Sounds simple, sounds easy … or is it?
What if you do a favour for someone and they don’t reciprocate? Or vice versa? Would that spoil the relationship? Or spoil the friendship if it were with a friend? Is quid pro quo assumed when granting a favour? How does it really work?
I personally assume if someone I know helps me out then I’ll repay the favour sometime in the future. There’s no thinking about contingency. It’s just the way it is. If it’s a stranger that helped me out, then I be sure to help out another stranger or minor acquaintance at some point.
On the other hand, if I help someone out I do it without thinking of payback. I don’t need payback. I just want to help someone. It feels good and most importantly it’s the right thing to do. Don’t you think?
Until the next time.
The world would be a Better place if everyone would help each other without expecting something in return ….😊
