After yesterday’s margarita and taco bash one would think May 6 would be a calm, orderly day. Nope. Not the case.
Along with some mainstream special days there are a number of, shall I say, different holidays and observances including …
International No Diet Day
National Crepes Suzette Day
No Pants Day
Tuba Day
No Homework Day
National Beverage Day
And there were some pretty significant happenings as well …
1833 John Deere made the 1st steel plow
1889 The Eiffel Tower was officially opened to the public at the Universal Exposition in Paris
1837 The Hindenburg caught fire and was destroyed. Thirty six people were killed.
1940 Steinbeck won the Pulitzer Prize for The Grapes of Wrath
1972 Elton John released Rocket Man
1987 Mario Andretti set a one lap speed record at Indy …. 218.204 MPH
A busy day overall wouldn’t you say? Of all these things I listed I had to find out more about No Pants Day so I did what anyone would. I googled it.
National No Pants Day is the first Friday of May so this year it happens to be May 6. Celebrated mostly in the U.S. it’s a day where participants spend the day without wearing pants in public. Not sure what they do wear, if anything. Yikes.
Some say it began in 1985 or 1986 but it’s unclear. Some say it started in Austin, Texas. That too is unclear. What is clear is that it’s often mistaken for No Pants Subway Ride Day in early January which started in New York City.
Way back in 2002 a guy named Charlie Todd from Improv Everywhere thought up No Pants Subway Ride Day. He wanted to confuse and hopefully amuse bystanders. So 7 guys boarded a subway car at different stops all wearing winter gear from head to toe … except pants, of course. As of 2014 the day has spread to almost 60 cities in over 25 countries. Unfortunately I don’t have current numbers as that’s the last year Improv Everywhere provided totals on their website. Check out their website … they’ve done some fun things.
And finally to sum the day up … courtesy of Walter Cronkite …
“And that’s the way it is.”
Until the next time.
They have the subway ride here in Toronto every year. I try and avoid the subway that day! 😳
