I’m not a good museum person. I didn't get the museum gene. I didn’t get the patience to spend hours in a museum wandering around absorbing “culture”. And it doesn’t bother me at all. Although I do have family and friends who are probably cringing right now at these words.
Honestly, I’m happy not to be wandering the rooms of a museum looking at paintings or sculptures or whatever the installations are. I’m happy not to be standing motionless gazing at a picture for example. Although, I find it fascinating that some of the artwork is hundreds of years old. It’s amazing that the paint is that old and probably the frames as well. But to spend hours there … nope, not me. I’m good for about an hour then I need to move on.
But, take me to a historic library and I’ll be there for hours wandering the stacks gazing at the books, fixtures, flooring and furniture. I’ll spend a considerable amount of time looking through books. Fiction or non-fiction, it doesn’t matter, that is where I‘m happiest absorbing culture.
If I come upon an art book and see works by an artist that attracts my attention then I make a mental note to view their creations the next time I’m in a fine art museum. But, I won’t wander aimlessly for hours through it. I have a mission to see those particular works only. That’s me. You may be different.
Thanks for reading.
Until the next time.
We went to the Smithsonian years ago. I was good for about an hour. Then realized that there were many (really, many) other buildings at the Smith'. No, please, let's go now. I feel your pain.
Certain museums do it for me, others leave me wondering. 😁
