Who’s the fairest of them all?
Yes it’s just a silly rhyme from a fairytale but I imagine it had an impact on a lot of young minds at one time. How many of those young minds peered at a mirror asking themselves the same question. I wonder.
For me, I never worried about how I looked. It didn’t matter to me if I was “fair” or not. What mattered to me was that I was liked by my peers. Not liked for what I looked like, or the privileges I had or didn’t have or athletic ability or inability or smart in school or not but for the person I was. And it still matters to me today. I’m just a simple person. Or maybe not.
Was that rhyme taken seriously by some? If so, I’m wondering how it shaped their lives. Did they forgo a career they were interested in because they believed they were “fair” and chose careers that highlighted that “fairness”. Did they miss out on something spectacular? Have they thrived? I wish I knew.
I’m curious, what do you think? Did that rhyme impact your life?
Until the next time.
Good, timely post when marketers want us to believe we need their products to look 'better.'
As a youngster I didn't think much about looks, clothes, etc. Once I hit middle-school that changed and peer pressure took over. I didn't have much self-esteem regarding my appearance; I thought my classmates were more attractive. It did have an impact and negatively affected certain choices I made later.
We need to teach young people to prioritize other qualities over physical looks. Beauty is only skin-deep as they say.
