Today isn’t my usual day to write or post but it’s a special day so here we go …
Happy 158th Birthday Canada. I hope it’s an amazing day. Those sentences are sorta my stock words when I wish someone a happy birthday so I thought, “why not use them here.” It is, after all, a birthday.
Canada officially became a country on July 1, 1867. It started out with a few provinces (Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia) uniting to become stronger together. As years passed we’ve grown into a strong country of 10 provinces and 3 territories. We are a bilingual, multicultural country and I couldn’t be prouder of all our people.
In general, we’re a caring, tolerant society. We try to take care of each other and I think it’s a good thing. Actually, I know it’s a good thing. We have come to the aid of many countries putting ourselves on the frontlines of wars, we’ve taken people into our country that needed help, we’ve brought people into our homes when their country was under attack and their airspace closed. We’ve been known as the world’s peacekeepers. We’ve been told the world needs more Canada. Honestly, I couldn’t agree more.
But enough of the seriousness … it’s a day to celebrate our incredible country and people. It’s a day to enjoy, to indulge and to relax.
My biggest indulgence was a leisurely bike ride through the streets of the city I live in. It was quiet as it was early morning but most of the people I saw either walking or riding were decked out in something red. I saw red hats, red dresses, red shirts, red shorts and red shoes. I saw the red maple leaf everywhere. The flags were hanging on garage doors, in flower planters, attached to cars, hanging from trees and flying high on flagpoles. It was a sight to see.
I’ll spend the rest of the day eating bbq, playing silly lawn games, raising a glass of cheer to all Canadians and Canadians in waiting on this amazing day. Happy Canada Day! We are blessed to live in a country such as this.
Until the next time.
