The other day I called my local bakery to put an order in for a lemon meringue pie. It was a simple process to order and arrange a pickup time. Then it got a little weird.
When I gave the person my last name for pickup she said she knew the name. Then went on to ask if my husband was so & so, if he attended a certain high school, was he going to an up coming reunion and was I going as well. I answered yes to all and thought that’d be the end of it. Nope.
She then told me about how my husband was a couple grades ahead of her in school, mentioned she saw him in the hallways all the time, named a couple people he knew and then she said he dated the same girl all the way through high school. Hmmm. I was waiting for her to say more about the high school girlfriend because why not, she seemed to want to fill me in on things. I was expecting something like “what a bitch” or “what a nice person”. But she stopped … silence … crickets. I’m pretty sure it occurred to her at that point that she could be talking to that girl because she then asked me my name. Yup, you guessed it. I was that girl.
Fortunately I always try to be nice on the phone and I was nice & patient during the questions even though I thought they were a bit intrusive. In my opinion, it was just manners. And in this case it turned I wasn’t anonymous. My good manners saved possible embarrassment.
So be polite always. Sometimes there’s an unexpected surprise.
Until the next time.
Definitely a weird feeling…quite innocent on the other person I’m sure but when you realized it was you she was talking about …was a very quiet aha moment in your head I’m sure!! It’s when you are glad you were polite and kinda non committal in replying….
I too have experienced situations somewhat like you and have thought” don’t say what you feel but what is polite and simple “ and been glad that I did not what I normally do and blurt out my feelings ! Lol!!! Always good to be polite !,🤔🥰
oh that took an awkward turn real fast
