We have a 37 year tradition at our house. It occurs on Labour Day weekend. We call it “50 Weekend” after the Labatt 50 beer.
Why, you ask? Well, because my husband buys this beer for the weekend and whenever any guests come over it’s the only beer offered to them.
50 Weekend is basically a neighbourhood drop-in party to celebrate the end of summer and the kids going back to school in the city we live in. It’s evolved over the years from the whole weekend to Labour Day Monday only. Everyone in our neighbourhood is welcome and people usually start dropping by around 3-4 pm. Beers and light snacks are served.
This little get together serves as a catch up for all of us who’ve been away on holidays during the summer. It’s a fun few hours listening to everyone’s summer adventures and future winter plans.
This year was no exception. Almost everyone invited showed up toting their kids if they had any and their lawn chairs. Some brought snacks to add to the snack table, some brought other forms of drink to have after their bottle of 50. Lots of summer stories and laughs were shared.
I personally think it’s a great way to toast the end of summer. Cheers!
Until the next time.
What a great tradition!
